dignity of man
Inherent human value
Dignity of man is a philosophical and religious concept holding that human beings possess inherent worth simply by virtue of being human.
The idea appears across traditions—in religious teaching that humans are made in God's image, in Enlightenment philosophy emphasizing reason and moral agency, and in human rights discourse asserting that certain treatment violates what people fundamentally deserve.
The dignity of man demands that we treat prisoners humanely.
