dialyzing

Cleansing through membranes

Dialyzing is the process of separating substances in solution by passing them through a membrane that allows smaller molecules through while blocking larger ones.

In medicine, dialyzing refers to filtering a patient's blood when the kidneys cannot: He's been dialyzing three times a week since his kidneys failed.

The term also applies to laboratory purification techniques in chemistry and biochemistry.
