development hell
Stalled project limbo
Development hell describes the prolonged limbo where creative projects—especially films, video games, and television shows—remain stuck in pre-production, often for years or even decades.
A project in development hell typically cycles through multiple writers, directors, or concepts without ever reaching actual production.
That superhero movie has been in development hell since the early 2000s.
The term implies frustration, wasted effort, and uncertainty about whether the project will ever see completion.
