Ink stains are marks left by ink on fabric, paper, skin, or other surfaces.
They're notoriously difficult to remove from clothing: I got ink stains all over my shirt pocket.
The phrase sometimes appears figuratively for lasting marks or evidence of writing work: the ink stains of a journalist's career.
