design sketch
Preliminary visual plan
A design sketch is a rough, preliminary drawing used to explore ideas before committing to a finished design.
Architects, industrial designers, and artists use design sketches to work through concepts quickly: She filled three notebooks with design sketches before settling on the final chair shape.
The emphasis is on speed and experimentation rather than precision.
