test driving
Pre-purchase vehicle trial
Test driving is trying out a vehicle before buying it—taking it on the road to evaluate how it handles, accelerates, and feels.
The term extends to any trial use: I'm test driving this software before committing.
As a noun phrase, a test drive is the trial itself: Let's schedule a test drive for Saturday.
