debouching

Exiting a confinement

Debouching is the act of emerging or issuing forth from a narrow or confined space into a more open area.

The term comes from military usage, describing troops moving out of a defile or narrow passage onto open ground: The battalion began debouching from the mountain pass at dawn.

Rivers debouch when they empty into larger bodies of water.
