debearding
Removing bivalve threads
Debearding is the removal of byssal threads—the stringy fibers mussels use to anchor themselves to surfaces.
Before cooking mussels, you pull or cut away this "beard": Make sure to scrub and debeard the mussels before steaming.
The term also applies to trimming excess material from molded plastic parts or removing facial hair, though these uses are less common.
