debeard
Strip mussel threads
To debeard is to remove the beard from something—most commonly mussels, which have fibrous threads (the byssus or "beard") protruding from the shell that must be pulled off before cooking: Scrub and debeard the mussels, discarding any that don't close.
The term also applies to removing awns from grain or unwanted hairs from other surfaces.
