death throe

Dying body's spasm

A death throe is a violent movement or spasm during the act of dying.

Almost always plural: the death throes of the wounded animal.

Figuratively, death throes describes the final, often chaotic stages of something ending: the death throes of the Roman Empire, a company in its death throes.
