death-rattle
Terminal respiratory sound
A death-rattle is the gurgling or rattling sound sometimes heard in the throat of a dying person, caused by breath passing through accumulated mucus or fluid.
The term extends figuratively to describe the final, failing efforts of anything in its last moments: the death-rattle of a dying industry, the engine gave a death-rattle and quit.
It suggests not just an ending but the unmistakable sound of that ending.
