dapples

Patches of light

Dapples are spots or patches of color or light, especially rounded ones contrasting with their background: Dapples of sunlight filtered through the leaves.

The word most often describes the mottled coat pattern on horses—a dappled gray has darker rings on a lighter coat.

As a verb, to dapple is to mark with such spots: Shadows dappled the forest floor.
