dago
Ethnic slur, Mediterranean
Dago is an ethnic slur for a person of Italian, Spanish, or Portuguese descent.
Originally applied to Spanish or Portuguese sailors, it shifted primarily to Italians by the early twentieth century.
The word is offensive: The landlord wouldn't rent to dagos or Jews.
Some Italian Americans use it ironically among themselves.
