custody order
Child placement ruling
A custody order is a court ruling that determines which parent or guardian has legal responsibility for a child, including where the child will live and how decisions about the child's welfare will be made.
Custody orders typically address both physical custody (day-to-day care) and legal custody (decision-making authority), and may establish visitation schedules for the non-custodial parent: The judge issued a custody order granting her primary physical custody.
