cultured pearl
Oyster-raised jewel
A cultured pearl is a pearl grown inside a mollusk after humans deliberately introduce an irritant—typically a bead or piece of shell—to stimulate nacre production.
The process mimics how natural pearls form but under controlled conditions.
Most pearls sold today are cultured rather than harvested from wild oysters: a strand of cultured pearls.
