ammolite

Iridescent ammonite shell

Ammolite is a rare gemstone formed from the fossilized shells of ancient ammonites, marine mollusks that went extinct with the dinosaurs.

Found almost exclusively in Alberta, Canada, it displays an iridescent play of color similar to opal but with its own distinctive character.

The gem is prized for jewelry: Her pendant featured a brilliant ammolite with swirls of red and green.
