cultural reference
Common touchstone mention
A cultural reference is an allusion to something from shared culture—a movie, song, historical event, meme, or public figure—that assumes the audience will recognize it.
Cultural references create instant connection with those who get them and confusion for those who don't: The essay was full of cultural references I didn't understand.
They date quickly; yesterday's viral moment becomes tomorrow's obscurity.
