crude drugs
Raw plant medicines
Crude drugs are natural substances used medicinally in their raw or minimally processed state—dried plants, bark, roots, or animal and mineral materials.
The term distinguishes these unrefined products from purified compounds or synthetic drugs: Pharmacognosy students learn to identify crude drugs by appearance and smell.
Opium, digitalis leaves, and cinchona bark are classic examples.
