countergambit
Responding sacrifice move
A countergambit is a gambit played in response to an opponent's gambit—typically in chess, where one player sacrifices material to answer the other's opening sacrifice.
The term extends to any strategic situation where someone meets an aggressive move with their own risky countermove: Her countergambit caught the negotiators off guard.
