countercharging

Responding with accusations

Countercharging is responding to an accusation by making an accusation in return.

When someone charges you with wrongdoing, you countercharge by alleging their own misconduct: Instead of addressing the allegations, the senator spent the press conference countercharging his opponents with corruption.

The tactic shifts attention from defense to offense.
