Count sheep is a traditional remedy for insomnia: you imagine sheep jumping over a fence one by one, counting each until you drift off.
The method rarely works—the mental activity tends to keep people awake—but it remains the standard metaphor for trying to fall asleep: I was up all night counting sheep.
