contredanse
Partnered square dance
A contredanse is a formal group dance in which couples face each other in two lines, performing coordinated figures and exchanging partners.
Popular in European courts during the 17th and 18th centuries, it evolved from English country dances and influenced later forms like the quadrille and square dance.
