Contraries are things that stand in opposition to each other—hot and cold, light and dark, love and hate.
In logic, contrary propositions cannot both be true but can both be false.
The phrase on the contrary introduces a statement opposing what came before.
A person described as contrary is stubbornly oppositional: She's so contrary she'd argue the sky isn't blue.
