conspiracism

Seeing hidden plots

Conspiracism is the tendency to explain events through conspiracy theories—the belief that powerful hidden actors secretly manipulate politics, economics, or society.

Unlike belief in a specific conspiracy, conspiracism describes a worldview where such explanations are the default: His conspiracism led him to distrust every official account.

The term often carries critical connotations, suggesting excessive or unfounded suspicion.
