consecutive sentence
Back-to-back imprisonment periods
A consecutive sentence is a prison term that begins after another sentence ends, rather than running at the same time.
When a judge imposes consecutive sentences for multiple crimes, the defendant serves them back-to-back: He received two consecutive five-year sentences, meaning ten years total.
The opposite is a concurrent sentence, where terms overlap.
