concurrent sentence
Penalties overlap completely
A concurrent sentence is a prison term served at the same time as another sentence, rather than one after the other.
When a defendant is convicted of multiple crimes, a judge may order sentences to run concurrently, meaning the total time served equals the longest individual sentence: The judge ordered the two five-year terms to run concurrently.
The opposite is a consecutive sentence.
