consecrating

Declaring something holy

Consecrating is the act of making something sacred or dedicating it to a holy purpose.

A bishop consecrates a church, bread and wine are consecrated during communion, ground is consecrated for burial.

The word extends to solemn secular dedications: consecrating one's life to a cause, consecrating a memorial to fallen soldiers.

What's consecrated is set apart from ordinary use.
