conflict diamonds

War-funded precious stones

Conflict diamonds are gems mined in war zones and sold to finance armed conflict, particularly civil wars in Africa.

Also called blood diamonds, the term emerged in the 1990s as awareness grew that diamond purchases could fund brutal insurgencies: The jewelry industry developed certification systems to exclude conflict diamonds from legitimate trade.
