cone of silence

Hush-hush meeting space

A cone of silence is an imaginary barrier preventing conversation from being overheard, from the malfunctioning device in the 1960s TV spy comedy *Get Smart*.

The phrase usually appears with ironic awareness of its absurd origin: Let's step into the cone of silence.

It describes any attempt at private conversation in a semi-public setting, or metaphorically, a refusal to discuss something: The administration has dropped a cone of silence over the investigation.
