compassionate leave

Family emergency time

Compassionate leave is time off from work granted when an employee faces a family emergency or bereavement—typically the death or serious illness of a close relative.

The term is more common in British than American English, where *bereavement leave* or *family leave* often covers the same ground: She took compassionate leave after her father's death.
