command-line interface
Type-to-operate system
A command-line interface is a way of interacting with a computer by typing text commands rather than clicking icons or menus.
The user types instructions at a prompt, and the system responds with text output.
Programmers and system administrators often prefer command-line interfaces for their speed and precision: I installed the package from the command line.
Often abbreviated CLI.
