collection basket
Church donation container
A collection basket is a container passed among members of a religious congregation to gather monetary offerings during a service.
The basket—sometimes a plate, bag, or similar vessel—circulates through the pews while worshippers contribute cash or envelopes: She dropped a twenty in the collection basket.
The term extends figuratively to any charitable solicitation.
