co-op housing
Member-owned residential building
Co-op housing is a form of residential property where residents collectively own the building through shares in a cooperative corporation rather than owning their individual units outright.
Each member holds a share entitling them to occupy a specific unit and vote on building decisions.
Co-ops often have approval processes for new buyers: The co-op board rejected three applicants before accepting us.
Common in New York City and other dense urban areas.
