co-emperor

Joint imperial ruler

A co-emperor is a joint ruler sharing imperial authority with another emperor.

The arrangement was common in the Roman Empire, where senior emperors appointed colleagues or successors to help govern vast territories: Diocletian established a system of co-emperors to stabilize the empire.

The term applies to similar arrangements in other imperial systems.
