cloches

Bell-shaped plant covers

Cloches are bell-shaped covers, typically glass or plastic, placed over plants to protect them from frost and create a warm microenvironment: I put cloches over the seedlings in early spring.

The word also refers to close-fitting bell-shaped women's hats popular in the 1920s: She wore a felt cloche pulled low over her brow.
