circumstantiality

Roundabout, digressive speech

Circumstantiality is a pattern of speech or writing that takes excessive detours through irrelevant details before reaching the point—if it reaches the point at all.

The term appears mostly in psychiatric contexts, describing patients whose answers wander through tangential material: Asked about his medication, he launched into a story about his pharmacy, then the weather that day, then finally his dosage.

Unlike tangentiality, circumstantiality eventually arrives at its destination.
