checksumming
Detecting transmission errors
Checksumming is the process of generating or verifying a checksum—a value calculated from data to detect errors or confirm integrity.
When you download software, checksumming compares the file's calculated value against the published one: I'm checksumming the ISO before burning it to make sure the download wasn't corrupted.
