check-swing
Batter's pulled punch
A check-swing is a baseball batter's attempt to stop a swing before committing to it.
If the bat crosses the front of the plate or the batter's wrists "break," umpires may rule it a full swing and count it as a strike.
The judgment call is notoriously subjective: The umpire ruled it a check-swing, but the replay looked like he went around.
