character arcs
Protagonists' internal journeys
A character arc is the transformation a fictional character undergoes across a narrative.
The arc traces how events change who they are—their beliefs, values, or circumstances.
A protagonist might begin selfish and end selfless, or start naive and become cynical.
Her character arc from villain to antihero was the show's best element.
Stories may feature positive arcs (growth), negative arcs (corruption or decline), or flat arcs where the character remains unchanged but transforms the world around them.
