cave bears
Prehistoric European megafauna
Cave bears were large bears that lived in Europe and Asia during the Pleistocene epoch, becoming extinct roughly 24,000 years ago.
Named for the caves where their remains are commonly found, they were comparable in size to modern grizzlies but more heavily built.
Cave bears feature prominently in discussions of Ice Age megafauna and early human prehistory.
