Union infantry
Northern ground troops
Union infantry were the foot soldiers of the Northern (Federal) army during the American Civil War (1861–1865).
They fought on foot with rifles and bayonets, forming the backbone of Union military forces.
The term distinguishes them from cavalry, artillery, and Confederate troops: Union infantry held the line at Gettysburg.
