cauterise
Seal with heat
To cauterise is to burn tissue to stop bleeding or prevent infection, typically using a heated instrument, electric current, or caustic substance.
The practice dates to ancient medicine and remains common in modern surgery: The surgeon cauterised the wound to seal the blood vessels.
Figuratively, to cauterise something is to eliminate it decisively, as if burning it away.
Also spelled cauterize.
