caterpillar track
Continuous looped treads
A caterpillar track is a continuous metal belt looped around wheels, used instead of tires on tanks, bulldozers, and other heavy vehicles.
The design distributes weight across a larger surface area, allowing travel over soft or rough terrain where wheeled vehicles would sink or lose traction: The excavator's caterpillar tracks churned through the mud.
