catches up

Closes the gap

Catches up means to reach the same point as someone or something ahead.

If you've fallen behind, you catch up by closing the gap: I missed a week of class and had to catch up.

To catch up with someone can also mean to meet socially after time apart: Let's grab coffee and catch up.

When consequences finally arrive, they catch up with you: His lies caught up with him eventually.
