illuminated texts
Decorated medieval books
Illuminated texts are manuscripts decorated with ornate designs, borders, and illustrations—often featuring gold or silver leaf that catches light, hence "illuminated." Medieval monks produced illuminated Bibles, prayer books, and literary works, with elaborate initial letters and marginal imagery.
The term distinguishes these hand-decorated works from plain copied manuscripts: The Book of Kells is among the finest illuminated texts from the Middle Ages.
