carbon budgets

Permitted pollution totals

Carbon budgets are calculations of how much carbon dioxide can still be emitted while limiting global warming to a target threshold—typically 1.5 or 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

The concept treats atmospheric capacity like a finite account: At current emission rates, we'll exhaust the carbon budget within a decade.

Countries and corporations also set their own carbon budgets as emission limits over time.
