cage free
Not in enclosures
Cage free describes poultry—usually laying hens—raised without being confined to cages.
The term appears on egg cartons and meat packaging as a welfare claim, though standards vary: cage-free birds may still live in crowded indoor facilities without outdoor access.
We only buy cage-free eggs now.
Not to be confused with free-range, which implies some outdoor access.
