cabrioles

Legs beat midair

Cabrioles are ballet leaps in which the dancer beats one leg against the other in midair before landing.

The movement requires the lower leg to strike upward against the extended upper leg, creating a sharp, percussive effect: Her cabrioles were so clean you could hear the legs connect.

In furniture, cabriole describes a curved leg that swells outward at the knee and tapers inward at the ankle, common in Queen Anne and Chippendale styles.
