bridewealth

Groom's family pays

Bridewealth is property or money given by a groom's family to a bride's family as part of a marriage agreement.

The practice, found in many African, Asian, and Pacific cultures, establishes bonds between families and compensates the bride's family for raising her.

Unlike a dowry, which flows from bride's family to groom, bridewealth flows in the opposite direction: The groom's family paid bridewealth in cattle.
