bowdlerizations
Censored text versions
Bowdlerizations are acts of removing or sanitizing content considered offensive or inappropriate from a text, often clumsily or prudishly.
The word comes from Thomas Bowdler, who published an 1818 edition of Shakespeare with sexual and violent passages excised.
The term now applies broadly to any squeamish editing: The film's bowdlerizations left the story incoherent.
